No worry came to me as I retraced my footsteps. There was music in the air and I was a part of it.Life was meant for rejoicing, not for suffering. Focus on suffering and that’s what you get – more suffering. Be alive all your life, strange as that sounds, and you find that planet Earth can be a lovely adventure. So many years I had spent worrying about money, illness, family and everything else, that I’d lost sight of some of the more important aspects of life – joy, peace, quiet and understanding.
Creeping over me was a growing feeling of embarrassment for knowing so much and doing so little. I, who had learned such valuable lessons about life from Gideon, how could I not have put that learning to practical use? However, self-recrimination is as dangerous as chronic depression. It creates guilt, and guilt is perhaps one of the deadliest enemies of humankind. Guilt’s only message to us is,”You don’t deserve, you don’t deserve.” Feeling guilty about the past places limitations on us and prevents us from freely receiving good things in life today.
Yes, I did feel somewhat guilty for not practicing what I preached. It is said that someone once asked Socrates why he had done a seemingly stupid thing and he answered that it seemed to make sense at the time. Whatever it is that we did in the past, we did because it made sense at the time. From the vantage point of the present, it may appear extremely foolish, but the aim is to learn from our mistakes and proceed with life, resolving to do better next time. One of our biggest mistakes is to feel unworthy.
It seemed as if the walk home would last forever. There was no hurry as I enjoyed the exhilaration of the moment. There was peace in my heart, and I knew, as I never knew before, the joy of just being. The sound of footsteps behind me caused me to turn. Approaching was my old friend Gideon wearing a smile as wide as the horizon.

The piper looked at me, smiled and said, “They’ll be expecting you soon. Let’s go.” And he turned and piped as he slowly marched back to the village. I followed him at a distance until, over the next hill, I saw the village fires. A group of people was standing by in tense anticipation. As soon as they caught sight of me, they rushed over. By this time, the piping had ceased.
“You found him, eh Charlie?” One of the group asked the piper. I gazed about, quietly taking in the scene. One part of me was so much at ease that I felt I belonged there. Another part felt as if I were watching an old movie replay itself gently across the screen of my mind.
“Yes. At the right time and place. Just as we were told,” was Charlie’s reply.
For the first time since arriving here I spoke, addressing Charlie directly. “Charlie, that music was wonderful. Who is in charge here?”
An elderly couple stepped out of the small crowd, and both bowed low as the man spoke.
“My chieftain! Welcome back. My wife and I are in charge now. We knew you’d come again. You’ll stay with us tonight, I hope.”
I wondered why he addressed me as “My chieftain,” but thought it must be an old Scottish custom. It was almost as if I’d done this before.
“There seems to be somewhat of an emergency here,” I said. “Why are you so worried, Donald?” I knew his name without even knowing how.
“My lord,” he answered. “There’s a child in the village who is very ill. You are here to make him well.”
“I am . . . ? Oh, of course, I am,” I said, somewhat surprised but not wanting to show my ignorance.
I wasn’t really sure why I seemed to remember giving some medicine to a sick child in this village, but I wasn’t worried about it. The old man led me to a small house on the other side of the village. The others followed slowly. Entering the house, I was led to a boy lying in bed, covered with thick quilts. A woman, who I guessed was his mother, sat on an old wooden chair next to him lovingly holding his hand. Donald remained in the background as I approached. She rose from her chair, grasped my hand with tears in her eyes and pleaded, “You must help him, sir. The fever is very high.”

In the middle of trying to put the pieces together, there was a banging on my bedroom door and, as they sometimes do, Malika and Jonathan rushed in.
“Hi, Daddy!” Shouted Jonathan.
“We thought you were sleeping,” said Malika. “But when we heard the phone, we knew you had to be awake.” “Hi kids,” I said. “Is everything OK?”
They must have seen the confusion on my face as I sat there. Malika replied, “Yes, of course. What’s the matter, Daddy?”
“Nothing. Did you and Jonathan have a good time last evening? You didn’t give the baby-sitter a rough time, I hope.”
“Baby-sitter?” She asked. “What baby-sitter?”
“The one who took care of you last night,” I said. “What do you think I’m talking about?”
“We didn’t have a baby-sitter last night, Daddy. Are you sure you’re OK?”
“Maybe you were sleeping and the phone woke you up in the middle of a dream,” said Jonathan.
I looked at them curiously and then said, “Yes, I must have been dreaming. It seemed so real.”
“Tell us about your dream, Daddy,” said Malika.
Not wanting to say much, I replied, “It was something about going out to dinner with friends and leaving you and Jonathan with a sitter. That’s how dreams are sometimes. They seem so real.”
“You were so tired when you came home from the office yesterday,” Malika said, “that immediately after dinner, you told us you needed a nap. You changed into your nightclothes and fell asleep. It was very early. You really slept for a long time. I hope you’re rested now and feel a lot better.”
“And, Daddy,” said Jonathan, “you left the lights on. Malika and I turned them off.”
“Well, thank you. Let’s go get washed up and I’ll be down for breakfast in a few minutes,” I said.
I got out of bed and after a little while went downstairs for breakfast. Saturdays and Sundays have always been very special days for the children and me. During the week, they attend school and I go to the office. But on weekends we spend as much time as possible with one another. They grow so quickly and then they’re gone. I wanted to enjoy every moment I spent with them. Although it may appear at times that raising children is 90 percent sheer frustration and 10 percent pure enjoyment, I think the joy and the love make it all worthwhile. Like most other Saturdays, today promised to be fun.
After breakfast, the children wanted to go over to a friend’s house for a short while. When they were gone, I went upstairs and decided to rearrange some of my books while listening to music. Last night’s dream was still so vivid. If I listened carefully, I could still hear the mournful sound of bagpipes and the crash of the ocean upon the shores of the little village.
Thinking about nothing in particular and everything in general, I was starting to put the dream into the background of my mind when I noticed a sheet of paper at the foot of my bed. Paper comes from trees, I mused as I reached down and picked it up. Trees? Theo was speaking about trees last evening. Who was Theo? Oh, the dream, of course. Well, dreams are dreams and reality is reality, and they are two distinct segments of life. Thus ran my thoughts.
I glanced at the writing on the sheet of paper, assuming that it belonged to Jonathan or Malika. There, penned in beautiful letters, were the words, “Dinner at the Restaurant at the Edge of Eternity – 7:00 P.M.” I stared at it again, as I stood there in total amazement. Perhaps my dream was not a dream after all.
